How To Set Intentions That Truly Matter in 2025
As the year draws to a close, many of us find ourselves in a natural state of reflection. We look back on the months gone by and ask: Did I make the most of my time? Did my actions align with my values? As the new year approaches, we often begin setting intentions and goals to guide us toward a more meaningful and purposeful life.
In these moments of reflection, deeper questions arise: Why am I doing what I do? Am I on the right path? These aren’t always easy questions to answer, but they are essential for finding true direction—not just for worldly success, but for spiritual fulfillment as well.
The Power of Intentions
As I entered my own reflective space, I became drawn to the role of intentions in shaping our actions and perspectives. What I realized is that intentions are much more than fleeting thoughts or aspirations; in Islam, they are the foundation of every action. Intentions determine the value of what we do and whether it aligns with our ultimate purpose in life.
Over the past few months, I have been exploring the concept of Niyyah (intention) in Islam. Through studying its linguistic roots and how it evolved from the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to the jurists of Madinah in the 8th century, I discovered that intentions provide a framework for setting goals that align with Allah’s purpose. From how we spend our time and wealth to how we perform prayers, treat our families, and care for the environment, every aspect of our lives can be an opportunity to realign with our ultimate purpose.
Intentions as a Guide to Setting Goals
Intentions can be a powerful tool when setting goals for our lives. As we reflect on what matters most—whether it’s personal growth, our relationships, or our contributions to the community—we must ask ourselves: Are our goals aligned with the values that Allah has given us? How do we ensure that our actions reflect those values?
At the recent GMW Summit in Qatar, I had the opportunity to share these insights and explore how Muslims can intentionally set goals that lead to a balanced, fulfilling life. I’m excited to offer a free downloadable resource to help you set your own intentions and live with greater purpose.
Reflection for the New Year
This week, take a moment to reflect:
- Think about a time when you set an intention and it manifested beautifully in your life. What factors helped bring that intention to fruition?
- Now, think about a time when you set an intention, but it never came to be. What was different? What factors hindered the manifestation of that intention?
This Week’s Reflection
As you step into the new year, take time to pause and reflect on the power of your intentions. Setting meaningful, faith-aligned goals can transform your year and bring greater purpose to your life.
