A Month In Which Deeds Are Lifted Up To The Lord Of The Worlds
The month of Sha’baan is here, which means that we are now only a month away from reaching the blessed month of Ramadan. It is the eighth month of the Islamic calendar. It is said to be called Sha’ban because it is Sha’ba (branches out or emerges) i.e., it appears between the months of Rajab and Ramadan. Unfortunately, it is a month that is most neglected because many of us sometimes tend to focus more on the sacred month of Rajab and then on the month of Ramadan.
Usaamah ibn Zayd (رضي الله عنهما) said: “I said: ‘O Messenger of Allaah, I do not see you fasting in any other month like you fast in Sha'baan.’ He (ﷺ) said: ‘That is a month to which people do not pay attention, between Rajab and Ramadhaan, and it is a month in which deeds are lifted up to the Lord of the worlds. I like for my deeds to be lifted up when I am fasting.’” (Reported by an-Nasaa’i)
Woah! Isn’t that fascinating? The month of Sha’baan holds huge significance and often, many of us tend to not be aware of this amazing fact and ultimately be negligent during the month. It is Mustahabb (recommended) to make good use of the times when people tend to be negligent, by doing more acts of worship. A group of Salaf used to spend the time between Maghrib and ‘Ishaa’ in prayer, saying that it was a time when many people are usually negligent. Another example is reading the Qur’an at the time of Fajr, this a time when people are usually negligent.
One of the useful ways of making the best of voluntary worship is by concealing them - to keep it as a secret between the slave and his Lord. This is not obligatory but is something dear to Allah. One of the Salaf used to fast for years without anybody knowing about it. He would go to the marketplace carrying two loaves of bread which he would give away in charity, while he would be fasting. His family used to think that he ate the bread, whilst the people in the marketplace thought that he had eaten at home - Subhana Allah!
